Lower Mill

Set in the Cwmdu Valley within the Brecon Beacons, this project transforms a historic stone mill through a sensitive combination of refurbishment and contemporary extension. A Douglas fir–framed structure wraps around the lower level, using floor-to-ceiling glazing to introduce light and create a generous open-plan living and dining space. The new addition contrasts the weight of the original Welsh sandstone with a lightweight timber frame, while an extensive green roof planted with local species settles the extension into the landscape. Its position within the topography ensures it remains discreet, with no visibility from nearby public footpaths.

The mill was fully refurbished, retaining its character while introducing new layers of use and enjoyment, including a concealed bar accessed through the inglenook fireplace. External works introduced a swimming pool, sauna, sunken hot tub and comprehensive landscaping, turning the wider site into a coherent, sheltered retreat. Our involvement spanned concept design, planning, detailed design, project management and contract administration.
